Why does my car have a Transponder key?
Back in the 1990’s it became a legal requirement for cars intended for the UK market to be fitted with immobilisers. In order for the immobiliser to work it became necessary for them to work in combination with transponder keys. These transponder keys work by having a built in micro-chip that transmits and receives security data with the immobiliser. With the aid of sophisticated car key programming equipment we can program a transponder key to work with your vehicle.
There are a few tips that you may find useful in keeping your vehicles locking system working in tip top condition.
- If your car keys are worn and old consider replacing them as a preventative measure. This prevents your key from failing to operate or worse still, becoming so worn that it snaps off in the lock.
- You should always have a master key and a spare. Supplying a spare key is a lot cheaper than having to provide a solution when a key has been lost or broken.
- In the winter, if you find that your car locks are frozen simply heat the key gently and then insert the key into the lock, wait a few seconds and then try turning the key.
- If you accidentally get your keys wet place them somewhere dry and warm and leave for 24 to 48 hours before you push the remote buttons. Pressing remote buttons while the key is wet can induce a fault with the key.
